Sunset Stroll and Photo event Hike at Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park
Join the park naturalist for a relaxed sunset stroll through the unique Niobrara chalk formations of Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park. This off-trail experience is designed for enjoying and photographing the landscape as the evening light changes across the formations. Cameras of all kinds are welcome, including DSLR cameras, point-and-shoot cameras, and cell phones. Participants do not need to be photographers to attend. Anyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the quiet evening meander.
We will begin at the Ramada Overlook and venture into the canyon bottoms to explore portions of the rock formations. Along the way, we will stop at various locations to admire and photograph the landscape. Please remember this is a leisurely stroll and photo opportunity, not the full educational tour of the Badlands.
Space on sunset photo strolls is limited, and reservations are required. This event is capped at 15 participants. To reserve a spot, please email sarakay.carrell@ks.gov or call the Lake Scott office at 620-872-2061.
Sunset is at 9:08 p.m. on Saturday, August 8. It will be approaching dark by 9:30 p.m. It may be dark by the end of the hike. Plan accordingly.
What to Bring
Expect rough, uneven terrain, including grass, brush, and loose footing. Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear. Bring water, a snack, a flashlight or headlamp, and any camera equipment you would like to use. A hiking stick may also be helpful. Please do not underestimate the terrain, especially as daylight begins to fade.

Reservations
A simple email is all that’s needed. You will receive a confirmation once Sara Kay checks messages. During summer, her days off fall mid‑week, so replies may not be immediate.
Seasonal Conditions

Summer: Temperatures in the canyons are significantly warmer, and wind is often blocked by the rock formations.

Winter: North and northwest winds can funnel through the canyons, creating a strong wind‑chill effect.
Weather‑Related Cancellations
If a tour must be canceled due to weather, wind, storms, high heat, or other unsafe conditions, an email will be sent to everyone with a reservation.
Fees & Park Entry
There is no fee for the guided tour. A daily vehicle pass ($5 exact cash or check) or a Kansas State Park Annual Pass is required. The self‑pay kiosk is located at the park entrance. Please bring exact change, as there is no office at LJBSP to make change.
Restrooms
Restrooms are currently open, but temporary closures may occur due to water‑supply issues. Please plan ahead. The nearest alternatives are in Oakley, Scott City, or at Lake Scott.
Weather Awareness
Tours cannot be held after substantial rain or snow, or during high winds. Please monitor National Weather Service forecasts for Scott City and Oakley before your trip.
Pets
Well‑behaved dogs and other pets are welcome. Please bring a leash and water for your pet.
