Join the park naturalist for an off‑trail adventure through the unique Niobrara chalk formations of Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park. Expect rough, uneven terrain, including grass, brush, and loose footing. Wear sturdy, closed‑toe footwear. Bring water, a snack, binoculars, and a hiking stick. Please do not underestimate the terrain. This is an intermediate‑level hike at a moderate pace, with stops for learning, questions, and photos.
We begin at the Ramada Overlook and head into the canyon bottoms to explore the formations’ nooks, crannies, and spires. Along the way, we discuss grasses, forbs, mammals, reptiles, insects, geology, and other natural features. There is no set path, so each hike is a unique experience.
Space on guided hikes is limited, and reservations are required. Tours are capped at 20 participants. To reserve a spot, please email sarakay.carrell@ks.gov.
Hikes down into the rocks last approximately 1.5 hours. Please allow up to 2 hours total, including the walk back to the parking lot.
Ramada Overlook (main overlook at the west end of the parking lot)
A simple email is all that’s needed. You will receive a confirmation once Sara Kay checks messages. During summer, her days off fall mid‑week, so replies may not be immediate.
Summer: Temperatures in the canyons are significantly warmer, and wind is often blocked by the rock formations.
Winter: North and northwest winds can funnel through the canyons, creating a strong wind‑chill effect.
If a tour must be canceled due to weather, wind, storms, high heat, or other unsafe conditions, an email will be sent to everyone with a reservation.
There is no fee for the guided tour. A daily vehicle pass ($5 exact cash or check) or a Kansas State Park Annual Pass is required. The self‑pay kiosk is located at the park entrance. Please bring exact change, as there is no office at LJBSP to make change.
Restrooms are currently open, but temporary closures may occur due to water‑supply issues. Please plan ahead. The nearest alternatives are in Oakley, Scott City, or at Lake Scott.
Tours cannot be held after substantial rain or snow, or during high winds. Please monitor National Weather Service forecasts for Scott City and Oakley before your trip.
Well‑behaved dogs and other pets are welcome. Please bring a leash and water for your pet.
