Reports about waterfowl and waterfowl habitat conditions at federal reservoirs and several other Kansas public lands provide timely updates to help you plan your hunt.

Region 1 - Northwest Kansas

Glen Elder Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Looking much better than we've had in several years with the return of higher water levels. There will be some exposed mudflats in teal season as summer conditions have dropped water levels a few inches in recent weeks.

Jamestown Wetlands

Waterfowl Information	Seeing good numbers of blue-winged teal along with wood ducks; starting to see some pintails
Water Level	The two largest marshes, Gamekeeper and Gun Club, have good huntable water and Gun Club is filling. All other marshes are currently dry and will require more rainfall to fill. Pumping smaller marshes won't occur until the area receives more water.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Looking good for teal opener. Not much water showing with all the flooded moist soil habitat, however it will open up as the Fall goes on.
Area Notices and General Comments	Water levels will be changing weekly. KDWP staff will not be able to pump Buffalo Creek marshes or flood any junior water rights until the Republican River is above minimum desirable streamflow (MDS) levels. Scouting prior to your hunt is highly recommended. With the high abundance of wood ducks on the property, hunters need to be aware of their targets. All boating laws and regulations will be enforced.

Lovewell Reservoir

Waterfowl Information	Not much duck use yet. Resident Canada geese moving to the reservoir from private ponds.
Water Level	1,575.6 msl (7.0 feet below conservation pool); irrigation season ends September 11
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Vegetated mudflats ring the reservoir shoreline. 60 acres of Japanese millet was aerially seeded along the north shoreline in areas open to hunting. The reservoir level will continue to decrease due to irrigation releases through the remainder of the summer. A dredging project by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in from of the control gates will begin September 28 and continue for approximately 30 days. The reservoir will be dewatered further to complete this project. Low flows in the Republican River and water storage in Harlan County Reservoir will hinder normal refilling operations this Fall into Winter.
Area Notices and General Comments	A two-tiered waterfowl refuge is in effect at Lovewell: The land and water refuge in the northeast corner is a No Access Refuge year-round. The water refuge runs along a diagnoal line from the southeast corner of the dam to the western edge of the Lovewell Cabin area and includes Lovewell State Park. This area is open to fishing but closed to waterfowl hunting from November 1 through April 1. The inlet canal is closed to all activity September 16 through April 15, reopening to fishing on April 16.

Kanopolis Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Fair to poor on reservoir. Lake level is slowing dropping, resulting in little flooded vegetation and scare food resources. There may be some better opportunities on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed Big Bottoms areas and along the river corridor.
Area Notices and General Comments	Refuge is closed to all access September 1 through January 31 except by special permit.

Keith Sebelius Reservoir (Norton)

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Poor hunting conditions due to low water levels. A cover crop seed mix was broadcast over any accessible mudflats as water receded, but did not have much growth after germination. Aquatic food sources will be scare this season.
Area Notices and General Comments	Lots of exposed mudflats with short vegetation will make hiding hard.

Talmo Marsh

Webster Reservoir

Area Notices and General Comments	West end of the reservoir is very shallow water and deep mud again this year. Too shallow to take a boat to the west end. Use caution walking on the west end, the mud is deeper than the water.

Wilson Reservoir

Benedictine Bottoms

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Headquarters South Complex has excellent habitat with an abundant food source. The South Marsh of the West Complex has adequate food supply. The Japanese millet is starting to head out.
Area Notices and General Comments	Special Hunt Permits don't begin at Benedictine Bottoms until October 1, so no special permit is required for teal hunting in September. Headquarters South Marsh Complex and the South Marsh of the West Complex will be only wetlands pumped for teal season. The rest of the wetlands that are currently listed as dry will be pumped in October.

Clinton Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Coblentz and East Coblentz have harvested corn and some standing millet, smartweed, and milo. Shadden Marsh pools have mixed moist soil, foods, and harvested crops. The perimeter of the lake is growing good vegetation for food.
Area Notices and General Comments	Elk Creek Wetland Complex renovation state 2 is currently on schedule to be completed in October. Pumping cannot begin until this project is completed. Coblentz pools are awaiting minor repairs to wetland berms and water control structures before pumping for teal season.

Hillsdale Reservoir

Marais des Cygnes

Waterfowl Information	Wood duck have been observed but no teal.
Water Level	Little to none. No pumping is expected before teal season. Almost all units are dry. Water gauge readings: F West 14 inches; F South 12 inches. With forecasted temperatures and wind, high evaporation is expected.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	No row crops planted. In general, moist soil production was poor to fair. KDWP staff are actively controlling undesirable vegetation in wetlands and working on several projects. Pumping will likely begin in early-to-mid October for most of the wetland units. Hunters should expect areas that were burned, disced, or sprayed across the area in several units for this hunting season. Drought conditions through the summer impacted seed production and germination.

Melvern Reservoir

Waterfowl Information	a very few blue wing teal have been seen on the main lake
Water Level	No water in any marshes currently except for the two south Lowman's Cove ponds. Lake level was 1,036.02 feet on September 1 - at conservation pool.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Most marshes have good to excellent moist soil production. Japanese millet and a wetland food plot mix were planted in some areas of Price, Shoveler, and Willow. The refuge has good moist soil production as well.
Area Notices and General Comments	The electric pump for Willow and Shoveler is down due to vandalism and awaiting repair. Hopeful the pumps will run soon if the water levels in the river allow.

Milford Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Cattails continue to be the predominant vegetation in most of the wetland cells due to not being able to pull water off parts of the wetlands. Desirable moist soil vegetation can be found outside of the dense cattail stands.

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Black Vermillion has good moist soil habitat. Habitat is poor in all other marshes due to water on the marsh for most of the spring and summer.

Region 3 - Southeast Kansas

Cherokee Lowlands

Council Grove Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	The reservoir was at or above conservation pool for the majority of the summer. Moist soil vegetation is limited within the lake. Cover around the shoreline is good. Fall crops in the area have done well.

Elk City Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Flooding conditions at end of June, then turned very hot and dry for most of July and August. There is some decent moist soil plant production around the reservoir and in a few wetland areas, but a lot of the plants have dried and died.
Area Notices and General Comments	The refuge area on the south side of the lake is closed to all activities from September 1 through March 31.

Fall River Reservoir

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	08/26/26: Due to flooding in the spring, the agricultural tenant was only able to plant beans in some of the ag fields. Shorelines are bare in areas. Hunting conditions are currently poor.

Marion Reservoir

Waterfowl Information	very few waterfowl in the area
Water Level	Water level is currently 1,350.10 feet; conservation pool is 1,350.50 feet.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	The reservoir has been at or above conservation pool for most of the growing season, so there was not very much moist soil production this year. There is plenty of cover along the shoreline. Crops around the reservoir, mostly corn and beans, did well this year.
Area Notices and General Comments	The waterfowl refuge along the south side of French Creek extends 100 yards into the water and is not open for hunting. Many area roads don't have any rock on them and can get very greasy with just a little rain or snow. Be careful choosing which roads to travel on.

McPherson Valley Wetlands

Waterfowl Information	Canada geese, mallards, and wood ducks are present, along with the first few small bunches of migrant blue-winged teal and a few pintail
Water Level	Currently experiencing abnormally dry conditions. Expect very limited or no water until conditions improve. Current water coverage: Big Basin at 10% Chain of Lakes at 1% Little Sinkhole at 5% The majority of the water is less than 12 inches deep and is disappearing quickly in the heat and wind.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Moist soil vegetation has done well across the area, and there is plenty of waterfowl forage available if we start getting rain. In addition to planting 100 acres of millet, KDWP has treated more than 310 acres of undesirable wetland vegetation this growing season.
Area Notices and General Comments	Minimum Desirable Streamflow (MDS) Orders are in effect due to extremely low flows in the Little Arkansas River downstream of McPherson Valley Wetlands. This means water control structures cannot be closed, surface flows cannot be pumped, water cannot be diverted from Blaze Fork, and no surface run-off can be retained in any manners until the Little Arkansas River reaches MDS levels. KDWP will pump groundwater in limited quantities later in the season as the weather cools and soil moisture levels increase. Only a small amount of groundwater, if any at all, will be pumped for early teal season given the extremely dry conditions.

Neosho Wildlife Area

Water Level	08/26/26: Currently pumping water into multiple hunting pools for moist soil irrigation and in preparation of upcoming teal season. The majority of water is a few inches deep and concealed by vegetation.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	08/26/26: Area habitat has the potential to be good following heavy moisture early in the growing season. The majority of the area is moist soil with 45 acres of milled planted in multiple plots across Neosho Wildlife Area.
Area Notices and General Comments	No wake in boating lanes.; and no motorized boats allowed in pools 4A and 4B. No entry into the marsh (entering the water) before 5:00 am. No shooting or hunting from dikes. Pool 8 is youth/mentor only on weekends and holidays.

Slate Creek Wetland

Cheney Reservoir

Water Level	reservoir is 0.9 feet below conservation pool. The natural wetlands around the area are still holding some water. Redbluff Wetland is currently dry but boards have been placed and significant rainfall is needed to fill this wetland.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Habitat looks good this year. There is still a lot of structure to hid in around the lake from last year's drought. Plenty of vegetation in natural wetlands and good moist soil response in Redbluff Wetland.
Area Notices and General Comments	Refuge is closed to all hunting and that boundary extends into the water surrounding the refuge. There is no hunting in Cheney State Park, including ponds within the state park boundary.

Cheyenne Bottoms Wetlands

Waterfowl Information	Low numbers of blue wing teal. A lot of wood ducks and mallards present for this time of year, as well as a few pintails.
Water Level	Water is being added to 3A, 3B, and 4A. Water levels are less than 8 inches in those pools. Water is soaking in and evaporating off at a high rate due to the extremely hot, windy, and dry conditions. Most of the water that was stored in 1A has been used up. About 33 inches in 1B and 1C that won't be used until closer to the regular duck season.
Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Pool 2: decent moist soil; some access trails and hunting holes have been mowed. Pool 3A: fair moist soil; access trails and around blind islands have been mowed. Pool 3B: 40 acres of mature wheat, 160 acres of milo, 290 acres of millet, and decent moist soil. Some of the milo and millet is in fair condition, the rest is failed due to dry conditions. Access trails, boating channels, and around some blind islands have been mowed. Pool 4A: fair moist soil; access trails, boating channels, and around blind islands have been mowed. Pool 4B: fair most soil Pool 5: poor moist soil
Area Notices and General Comments	All boats must be operated at no wake speeds. Pool 3A is closed to motorized boats. Pool 4A closes to motorized boats at 1:00 pm. Do not use foot crossings to unload trailered boats. All trailered boats need to be unloaded at designated boat ramps.

Habitat and Hunting Conditions	Lots of vegetation to hid in. Food sources are limited to annual smartweed in Big Marsh west of the lake. No millet was spread in the marshes.
