Butler State Fishing Lake is located in Butler County 3 miles west and one mile north of Latham, Kansas. The area is a 124 acre lake and is surrounded by 196 acres of Flint Hills prairie. The Lake was drained for rehabilitation in 1980. The lake was refilled and fish were stocked, including largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish. Three earthen fishing piers have been constructed in the lake to increase shoreline area and to provide shore anglers access to deeper water. Most of the land around the lake is native grass and primarily suitable for quail. The upper end of the lake has some dense woody vegetation along the creek bottoms that provide deer and turkey habitat. Waterfowl hunting on the lake can be excellent in the marsh vegetation at the upper end of the lake above the fishing piers.
