Whether it’s an overnighter or an extended stay, you’ll be amazed at the year-round options Kansas state parks, state fishing lakes and wildlife areas have to offer. From “primitive” tent campsites to utility sites for RVs, there are abundant opportunities for a relaxing outdoor experience. And, cabins with many of the comforts of home – including heating and air-conditioning – are available for rent at many state parks and some state fishing lakes and wildlife areas. Cabins are a great option for enjoying outdoor Kansas anytime of the year.

Camping on land and waters owned by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is allowed only in designated areas on department lands and waters and shall be subject to provisions or restrictions as established by posted notice. (K.A.R. 115-8-9)

Camping is allowed only in designated areas and is subject to restrictions as posted. All campers and camping units are limited to a stay of not more than 14 consecutive days in one campground although a one-time 14-day extension may be obtained with written permission from the park manager. A five-day absence is required before returning to the same campground to camp again.

The number of campsites available for reservation will vary by park – in most parks about half of the sites can be reserved. The rest will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Shelter and group campground reservations can be made through the park office where the facilities are located. You must be 18 or older to rent a cabin or campsite.

Minimum Stay Notice: A four-night stay will be required for camping reservations during Memorial Day weekend, and three-night stays will be required for camping reservations during the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.

Camping at State Fishing Lakes and Wildlife Areas

All campers and camping units at state fishing lakes or wildlife areas are limited to designated camping areas and a stay of not more than seven consecutive days on that department managed land unless otherwise established by posted notice or authorized by written permit from the department.

Not all state fishing lakes and wildlife areas allow camping. For those that do, camping is first-come, first served, campsites cannot be reserved, and camping can only be done in the designated areas. There is currently no cost to camp at state fishing lakes and wildlife areas. Camping is not allowed at any walk-in hunting area.

Upon completing seven consecutive days on the same campsite, each person and all property of each person shall be absent from the department-managed area for at least five days.

An extended camping stay of not more than seven additional consecutive days at the state fishing lake or wildlife area may be granted by written permit from the department if vacant camping sites are available.

How to Get on Reservation Waitlist

Here are the steps to get on waitlist for any specific campsite or cabin.

  1. Visit www.reserveamerica.com on a desktop browser. Unfortunately, the waitlist function does not work on the CampItKS mobile app or www.CampItKS.gov).
  2. Sign in using a ReserveAmerica username and password.
  3. Under Book Your Own Adventure, select the Kansas state park you wish to visit.
  4. Type in your arrival and departure dates.
  5. Select the site type. To select your preferred campground (loop), click on Advanced Options.
  6. Select Check Availability.
  7. If there are no available sites, select “Create Availability Notification” under the campground map.
  8. Select “Create this Notification.”

You may make a reservation for up to 364 days in advance.

Online state park reservations must be made at least three days in advance during the April-September park season. Otherwise, you must call the park offices. During the offseason (October-March), online reservations must be made at least five days in advance.

Online reservations for state fishing lake and wildlife area cabins must be made five days in advance year-round. Otherwise, you must call the office.

Full payment is required at the time the reservation is made. Payments online are made with credit cards. Payments made in cash or by check or money order must be made through the offices. Damage deposits for those paying by cash, check, or money order must be submitted to the office at the time of reservation.

A non-refundable reservation fee is required for each cabin at the time the reservation is made unless the cabin is reserved on the day of arrival. If the cabin is a same-day reservation, a transaction fee is charged.

Weekly reservation rates where offered, are determined on a seven-night basis. The eighth night is reserved at the regular reservation rate.

Cabin reservations have a complete-weekend rule. This means that a person must reserve the cabin for a complete weekend. If you reserve for Friday, you must also pay for Saturday, etc. There is no refund for days on a complete weekend that are not used.

  • Cancellation 5-29 days prior to arrival date results in loss of reservation fee, 1 night stay fees, plus a $5 cancellation fee.

The reservation price is the price indicated on the date of stay or the day for which the reservation is made.

Damages to the cabin upon checkout will be charged to a credit card or the Paypal account used to make the reservation. If the reservation was made by check, cash, or money order, a bill will be sent to the renter.

Check-out time is noon; check-in time is after 3 p.m. year-round at all KDWP cabins.

Pets are not allowed in the cabins, but may stay outside by following park regulations regarding pets. Some designated pet friendly cabins are offered, with payment of a $50.00 pet fee.

Linens or pillows are not provided.

We offer more than 85 cabins for our patrons' enjoyment. Cabins range from rustic to modern in amenities. Rustic cabins have electricity, heat/air, and beds with mattresses. Modern cabins offer electricity, heat/air, beds with mattresses, kitchenettes with refrigerator, stove, microwave and coffee pot, and a restroom with shower, toilet and sink. Renters would be required to bring their own bedding, towels, toiletries, etc. There are no televisions, telephones, or internet hookups provided. Smoking is not allowed in any of the camping cabins, and pets are allowed only in those cabins designated as pet-friendly, with a paid pet fee. State park vehicle permits are required in all Kansas State Parks. Camping cabin reservations can be made up to 364 days in advance, and up to 2 days prior to arrival. Reservable campsite availability

  • Shelter and group campground reservations can be made through the park office where the facilities are located.
  • When camping is allowed at a state fishing lake or wildlife area, sites are available only on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved.
  • Please note: You may reserve a campsite from April 1 to Sep. 30. From Oct. 1-March 31 they are only available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Note: you must be 18 or older to rent a cabin or campsite.

Information required by law

When you reserve online or pay your fees in person you will be asked for information required by the state’s Child Support Enforcement laws (K.S.A. 32-918 and K.S.A. 23-495). We cannot issue a recreational permit to people who have not paid child support as required by law.

Check-in, check-out, lengths of stay

A campsite reservation and associated fees cover the cost of the campsite. Vehicle permits are sold separately.

  • Only one camping unit is allowed per site.
  • Check in time is 2pm for campsites, and 3pm for cabin facilities. The check out time for cabins is noon, while check out time for campsites is 2 p.m.
  • If you reserved a campsite or cabin, and do not arrive within 48 hours after your scheduled arrival, we will cancel your reservation unless you make prior arrangements through the park office.
  • A weekend campsite or cabin reservation requires a two-night stay which must include a Fri/Sat night stay.
  • A holiday weekend campsite reservation requires a minimum of four nights’ stay, which must include some portion of the holiday. For cabins, three nights are required, which also must include some portion of the holiday.
  • Except for designated seasonal campsites, stays are limited to no more than 14 days on one site. Regulations require that after a stay on one site for 14 days, the camper must leave the campground or state park.

Making a payment

  • Payment in full is required at the time the reservation is made.
  • Payments are accepted online or by phone using MasterCard, Visa or Discover. Reservations made online or by phone must be paid in full by credit card at the time of reservation.
  • Payments made in person at the park office may be paid for using MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or cash. Money orders and checks are accepted with approval.
  • There is a non-refundable transaction fee per campsite, picnic shelter or facility.
  • There is a non-refundable reservation fee per cabin.

Reserving campsite or cabin in advance

We encourage you to go online and enter your customer profile data in advance. This will speed up your reservation process in the future. To ensure a campsite during peak season campers are encouraged to make reservations in advance of their camping trip.

Rental cabins and campsites in the reservation system can be reserved in one of two ways:

  1. Visit the online reservation system anytime at KSOutdoors.com.
    1. Campsite reservations may be made beginning in mid-December for the following year. They must be made two days in advance.
    2. Cabins may be reserved up to 364 days in advance of the planned stay.
  2. Contact any Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism state park office or the Parks Division at the Pratt Operations Office, 620-672-5911, 512 SE 25th Ave., Pratt, KS 67124-5911 during normal business hours.

Registering for a campsite upon arrival

All Kansas state park campsites use a numbered, color-coded post to identify each site. The color of the site number will indicate the type of amenities available:

Green = Primitive Site
Yellow = Electric Only
Blue = Electric and Water
White = Electric, Water and Sewer

  • If a red “R” is shown, the campsite is reserved. If the site is available, a card on the campsite post will indicate if the site is available for one or two nights.
  • If a reservation has not been made, in order to occupy the site, the camper must place their camping equipment on the site, then take the “Vacant” card to the park office or permit station and pay for the site.
  • Campers who arrive after business hours must take the card to the office or permit sales station by 10 a.m. the following morning to register.

Self-pay vehicle and camping permits are available for one night only. Additional days may be purchased at the park office or permit sales station.

Cancellations

Cancellation requests may be submitted online at any time. During normal business hours, contact the KDWP park office connected to your reservation if you have difficulties or call the KDWP Pratt Operations Office at (620) 672-5911. If you reserved a campsite or cabin, and do not arrive within 48 hours after your scheduled arrival, we will cancel your reservation unless you make prior arrangements through the park office.
