Kansas Fish Habitat Program - KDWP FIsheries - LogoThe Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks Fisheries Division is pleased to announce the newly formed Kansas Fish Habitat Program. The Division has been improving and creating aquatic habitat for fish and all aquatic organisms for many years. As many of the state’s lakes and reservoirs age, the quantity and the quality of available habitat decreases. Habitat work in these aging waters is more important now than ever before.

The Kansas Fish Habitat Program is dedicated to expanding habitat improvement efforts in Kansas waters by increasing awareness of planned projects, locating interested volunteer groups and other partners, increasing dedicated funding for habitat projects, and continued construction and enhancement of aquatic habitat for the benefit of anglers and all Kansans.

Why Fish Habitat?

Fish attractorFish habitat projects can include a myriad of methods such as aquatic vegetation establishment, rock piles and reefs, shoreline armoring, artificial fish habitats, and tree and brush piles. Kansas anglers reap the rewards of these projects through increased fish production, fish recruitment, improved water quality, and increased catch rates. Non-anglers benefit through improved overall health of impoundments, balanced aquatic ecosystems, decreased erosion, improved aquatic vegetation communities, and increased aesthetics of public waters.

Pond Management Program

Man fishing Approximately 100,000 Kansas ponds offer some of the best fishing the state has to offer. However, improperly managed ponds can result in some of the worst fishing. This section will provide pond owners and anglers with information to effectively manage fish and wildlife resources associated with ponds. Fish and wildlife can be accommodated in a multi-purpose pond with minimal adverse effects on other uses. While it may be infeasible to put all of these ideas into practice, pond owners and anglers should be aware of the potentials that exist for a pond that is built, developed, and managed as outlined in this booklet. Fish and wildlife can contribute significantly to the quality of life in Kansas!

Will the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks stock my pond?

From at least 1914 until 1990 the Department provided free fish for stocking in private ponds. This program was popular with both landowners and anglers. However, in the 1980’s the Kansas Commercial Fish Growers Association lobbied the Kansas Legislature to stop the agency’s pond stocking program because they viewed it as an infringement on the free enterprise system. In response to their efforts, during the1990 the Legislative session a bill was passed that prevents the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism from stocking ponds with fish unless the fish have been purchased from a private fish grower or the pond is open to public access.

Since that time, the Department’s primary focus has been to provide technical assistance on managing fish populations in ponds and information on where pondowners can purchase fish.

Pondowners not wishing to purchase fish may want to consider enrolling their pond in the Department’s W.I.F.A. Program. This program allows the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks to lease private water from landowners for public fishing. Landowners participating in W.I.F.A. receive payments which vary according to the number of water acres enrolled and may receive fish stockings from the Department’s hatcheries.
