About Walk-In Hunting Area (WIHA) and iWIHA Properties

Walk‑In Hunting Access (WIHA) and Interactive Walk‑In Hunting Access (iWIHA) areas are privately owned lands that landowners voluntarily enroll to provide public hunting opportunities. Through seasonal leases with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), participating landowners receive compensation while helping open more than one million acres of quality habitat to hunters each year.

Although these areas offer public hunting access, they remain private property, and use is restricted to hunting only during the posted access period for each property. Trapping is not allowed on WIHA or iWIHA lands.

Access Periods

Access dates vary by property. Fall WIHA access begins on either September 1 or November 1, and ends on January 31, March 31, or May 31. Hunters must check the Hunting Atlas or posted signs for exact dates. Entering WIHA or iWIHA properties outside the designated access period is prohibited.

Additional Requirements for iWIHA

iWIHA properties operate under the same rules as WIHA but include two important differences:

  • Hunters must check in and check out using their Go Outdoors Kansas account.

  • Hunter numbers are limited to protect habitat quality and landowner concerns. Once a property reaches its daily capacity, no additional check‑ins are allowed.

Hunter Responsibilities

To protect landowners and ensure safe, responsible use:

  • Do not cross onto neighboring properties; interior boundaries are marked.

  • Keep roads, gates, and driveways clear; parking is limited.

  • Avoid farm equipment, homes, and other sensitive areas marked with Safety Zone signs.

  • Follow all established hunting seasons and regulations.
