The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks' K-9 Unit began in 2002 with just five dogs and handlers. Today, there are 10 K-9 teams distributed throughout the state who specialize in tracking, wildlife detection and evidence recovery, among other vital functions.
Start-up costs for the program were funded through private donations – including the Unit's K-9s. The K-9 Unit uses all Labrador Retrievers, as this breed is generally even-tempered and highly trainable.
KDWP K-9s receive no aggression training.
In addition to their law enforcement duties, KDWP K-9s also regularly engage in public programs and demonstrations designed to educate the public on the importance of natural resource conservation.
