Sherman State Lake was built primarily for fishing, but since construction the dam has leaked severely to the point that, when sporadic flows fill the lake, it is dry again within two years. The area is now managed primarily for wildlife except for short periods when there is fishable water in the lake.

Kansas Veteran's Wildlife Area provides a source of quality habitat and hunting opportunities in Sherman County. Whitetail, Mule deer, pheasants and rabbits are the primary species found on the area. When the lake has water in the fall it can produce excellent waterfowl hunting. Habitat management focuses on food plots, controlled burns, and periodic short term intense grazing to encourage wildlife use of the area. Demand for public hunting opportunity often exceeds the supply, especially for deer and pheasant, on this small wildlife area. To reduce wildlife disturbance and improve hunting opportunities vehicles are restricted to maintained roads and parking lots.
